Such a small number is absolutely unheard of for the severe weather month of May. We were truly blessed to have seen the tornado in Ponca City, OK. This rare severe weather event is due to a REX block. This particular block usually occurs in the spring near the west coast, Nikki-Deehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16358556699417308955noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3795867589556047194.post-22563447942316810132009-05-19T21:03:00.003-05:002009-05-19T21:05:45.709-05:00*Dinner in NE*Storm Chase 2009We went to Ken & Dales, a local restaurant, for dinner in Alliance, NE. We may have been traveling, but we were still learning. We saw virga in Cheyenne, WY as well as Alliance, NE. It was an extremely unique sight. Virga is when precipitation is evaporating before it hits the ground. The evaporation is a cooling process (cold air sinks), Nikki-Deehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16358556699417308955noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3795867589556047194.post-32028129741173280872009-05-18T21:10:00.001-05:002009-05-19T21:07:30.709-05:00*Mountains @ Sunset*Storm Chase 2009After another afternoon of shopping, we went back to the Mountains to view them at sunset. We awoke to beautiful clear skies, and a picture perfect view! We saw snow with temperatures feeling like they were in the 60s due to dry air, but it was much colder. We drove up to 11,800 feet to capture the full view and to have a picnic lunch. The drive was nothing what I expected. We were able to view the mountains from 60+ miles away. Once we arrived in Estes Park, CO we checked into our breathtaking view from the top floor hotel, then went on a tour of the town. We made a pit stop for a quick round of putt-putt golf (yes, we had some whole in ones!!), then some brave souls Nikki-Deehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16358556699417308955noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3795867589556047194.post-14665635380010136412009-05-16T20:47:00.000-05:002009-05-17T09:14:42.440-05:00Storm Chase 2009Next Stop. . . I, along with many of my classmates had never seen such 'textbook' mammatus clouds. They are formed due to a strong updraft which is associated with severe weather such as large hail, strong winds, and possible tornadic activity.Nikki-Deehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16358556699417308955noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3795867589556047194.post-11230058436699376652009-05-15T19:47:00.000-05:002009-05-16T08:35:05.592-05:00*Lets Park in The Park*Storm Chase 2009 While waiting on the CAP to break this afternoon we parked in a beautiful park east of Wichita, Kansas. There were ducks, ponds, frisbees, and playgrounds to keep us entertained. Jill & I chose to do needlework (our NEW hobby), Heather read, while the other girls and David did various activities. This particular tornado was rather large. Thankfully it was in a field because it would have done a lot of damage to a town/city. The tornado was the most outstanding sight I had ever seen, the rotation was right before my eyes, I saw it drop down and make contact with the ground, where Nikki-Deehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16358556699417308955noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3795867589556047194.post-65225789233880079372009-05-13T20:00:00.003-05:002009-05-14T08:24:23.863-05:00*Microburst*Storm Chase 2009Today, we forecasted, waited, chased, and saw! It was most definitely a success. The environment had all of the ingredients needed for a tornado. CAPE values were high, wind shear was looking good, the cold front was moving our way (we were able to see it on radar since it was left in clear air mode), and all we needed was for one parcel to make it through the cap.
